[…] disruptive innovation doesn’t just make us richer, it also makes us freer and more equal. The same is true of cities. Ambitious young people flock to large cities not only for their economic opportunities, but also because they provide more choices and personal freedom. Their high density means that the cost of experimentation—trying a new cuisine, job, hobby, or romantic partner—is lower. This high rate of experimentation, in turn, helps explain why so many innovative ideas emerge from urban areas, producing much of the world’s wealth.
